“What do you mean you slept over at someone’s house?” my mom shouted, minutes after I’d entered the store. “When I left early this morning, I saw that the door to your room was closed, but I figured you were sleeping! You knew you had to be at the store by eight o’clock!”

“I know, I know, I know,” I said, running around the back room trying to piece together the work we had gotten behind on. My mom had apparently made the nine o’clock delivery herself when I hadn’t shown up, meaning that she had to cancel the wedding consultation she had scheduled at the same time.

The couple apparently had been livid with her on the phone, canceling on them at the last minute.

“Well, where the hell were you? You told me you were just going out for a couple drinks last night. God, we are going to be behind for the next two days because of this.”

“I’m sorry!” I said, raising my voice too loud. “I’m sorry,” I repeated, “but I went back to a friend’s house afterward, and we just passed out after having a little too much to drink.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “And which ‘friend’ would this be?” she said bitterly.

“He’s just a guy from Rosecrest.”

“It’s that guy, isn’t it,” she said. “The guy with his arms all covered in tattoos.”

“He works at the mini-mart?”

“Yes.”

She sighed heavily as if she couldn’t refute that point. “Chase, I’m not going to be too harsh with you, because this is very unlike you,” she said. “But do not make this a habit. This job is a privilege, not a right. And though I’m glad you’re striking up a relationship with the mini-mart worker, do not let that boy lead you down a bad path.”

“Bad path?” I mumbled under my breath.

“Hm?” she said.

“Nothing.”

She shook her head. “I just don’t know what you would see in a boy like that,” she said. “He’s not like your other friends from high school.”

How could I possibly answer that question for her?

Yeah, Mom, but I’m sorry, none of them made me come like he did last night. Oh yeah, by the way, I’m into guys, and I’m actually really hoping I can ask Andy to fuck me sometime in the near future. He makes me feel like I’m someone special.

“Please take care of all these shipments, Chase. I’m going to go call that couple and see if I can convince them to give us another chance.”

I met her eyes again, sighing. “I’m really sorry, Mom,” I said. “I won’t be late like this again.”

She nodded. “I know you won’t.”

The rest of the day passed ridiculously slowly. I was working on little sleep, no breakfast, and behind schedule, and it seemed like the phone didn’t stop ringing all day. By the end of the
